Who exactly are “the media,” again?

Sometimes, I come across a post on the Internet that leaves be scratching my head. Other times, I’ll read something that practically gives me a brain aneurysm. The tweet below is one such example:

So, let me ask the obvious question here: to what media might he be referring?

Is he reacting to watching news stories and events covered by the evening news? Is he using the word “media” to mean “society?” Is “the media” now the Zeitgeist or the universal consciousness?

I get the irony here, but I think the wrong group is being accused.
