Remembering The Journalists Killed on 9/11

Among the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks were two journalists. One died at ground zero photographing the burning towers. The other was a passenger on American Airlines Flight 11.

BILL BIGGART was a photojournalist who moved to Manhattan in the 1970s right when the World Trade Center was first opening. He would also take some of the most famous and compelling street-level photos of the tragic day the towers fell.

Biggart ran to Ground Zero the second he heard about the terrorist attack and was the only journalist to die while covering the attacks. His wife called him after the first tower collapsed. He told her he was safe with the firemen and that he would meet her in 20 minutes. His last photo was taken 20 minutes later at 10:28 a.m., when the North Tower collapsed. He was killed by falling debris. Biggart had three children.

THOMAS NICHOLAS PECORELLI was a cameraman for Fox Sports and E!. He was not covering 9/11, at the time, but was on his way home from a wedding. He was on American Airlines Flight 11. At the time, his wife, Kia, was pregnant and the New York Times notes that Pecorelli’s dream was to be a father. Kia named the child Nicolas Thomas Pecorelli after his father.
